The main tasks of an Emergency Department in a hospital are 24/7 admission of patients, their examination, clarification of diagnosis and providing emergency care according to medical protocols. It is here that sanitation, diagnosis, hospitalization and transferring patients to the hospital’s medical departments are carried out. Upon admission of an acutely ill patient with impaired vital functions diagnosis and treatment immediately begin in the department to provide the patient with emergency medical care according to the “golden time” standard. That is why the organization of an Emergency Room with appropriate modern diagnostic equipment is a requirement of nowadays.
According to modern standards, an Emergency Department conducts medical sorting of patients at the early hospital stage by flows and provides separate routes of hospitalization (the so-called “triage” system: “red” – patients in critical state, unconscious, with impaired vital functions) are transported immediately to the Emergency Room, where help and diagnostic measures are provided urgently); “yellow” – seriously ill, on stretchers, unable to move themselves, in not a life-threatening state, doctors have time to diagnose and provide care; “green” – patients with minor injuries and illnesses, able to move themselves, medical care can be ‘temporarily postponed’.
Design solutions include not only internal replanning but also planning of the hospital territory that is adjacent to the premises of the department with a drive for ambulances and other sanitary transport and provides for the installation of an arched canopy for them.
Engineering systems play an important role in the design of an Emergency Department: power supply of an Emergency Room provides for the possibility of long-term autonomous power supply (emergency power supply), power failures alarms, lighting of the premises, including emergency lighting, fire alarm, video surveillance, supply of medical gases (oxygen and compressed air) to the emergency room and the room for endoscopic examinations. The room for registering patients is equipped with the systems of wired and wireless access to the Internet and local network, a telephony network, an alert system and a clock system.
